Over Memorial Day Weekend, I took pictures of actual humans for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic started! For the last few months, I’ve mainly been taking pictures of inanimate objects (see: Easter Bunny family photos). These cap and gown sessions were new to me, but they were so much fun! As a bonus, they happened to be some of my 2020 senior photography clients, so I got to catch up with them and their families months after taking their senior pictures!
Visiting the old stomping grounds
I took Megan and Kyle’s cap and gown pictures outside of Oshkosh West High School (my alma mater!). While I was in Oshkosh, I walked around and relived some of my high school memories (mainly, I visited the tennis courts…that’s where I spent most of my time anyway!). Then I visited my parents and brothers and had a socially distanced dinner on the front porch (my mom did let me in to use the bathroom :)). The next day, I caught up with Ethan and his mom at Lakeview Park in Middleton! His mom Jenny and I play tennis together, so it was great to catch up with her. She even brought me a few homemade masks…Now the most fashionable ones I have!
Bringing some joy to the madness
When I planned these cap and gown sessions, I wanted to bring a little bit of joy to these seniors. We all know they are missing out on milestones that I know I took for granted ten years ago. I admire how positive each of them are staying despite missing out on their last few months of high school. Each of their schools currently have graduation ceremonies planned for later in the summer, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they get the celebration they deserve! At the very least, I hope they can look back on these cap and gown photos one day and remember all they accomplished, and all they overcame in 2020. One of the best parts of being a photographer is being able to create joyful memories, even in the midst of challenging seasons.
