Looking for a wedding venue in Madison, Wisconsin? We’re Morgan and Ryan, a Madison-based wedding photography team, and we’ve photographed weddings at venues throughout Madison and Southern Wisconsin. We created this guide to help couples compare some of our favorite wedding venues in Madison and the surrounding area – with real wedding photos, guest capacities, venue styles, ceremony options, and our perspective on what makes each space unique.
Madison has an incredible variety of places to get married. You’ll find modern downtown venues, lakefront hotels, botanical gardens, restored industrial spaces, barns, country clubs, and countryside venues within a short drive of the city. Some are especially great for couples who want everything to happen in one location, while others stand out because of their architecture, outdoor ceremony spaces, guest experience, or photo opportunities.
Throughout this guide, we’ve included both venues located in Madison proper and wedding venues in nearby communities such as Middleton, Mount Horeb, Stoughton, Sun Prairie, Cambridge, and Oregon.
If photography is important to you, we’ll also point out things we pay attention to as wedding photographers: natural light, indoor photo options, getting-ready spaces, portrait locations, ceremony layout, sunset opportunities, and what happens when Wisconsin weather doesn’t cooperate.
Quick Answers: Choosing a Wedding Venue in Madison, WI
Which Madison wedding venues have lake views?
Some of the strongest lakefront wedding options around Madison include The Edgewater and Memorial Union on Lake Mendota, Monona Terrace on Lake Monona, and country clubs including Bishops Bay, Blackhawk, and Maple Bluff. Bishops Bay is particularly distinctive because couples can hold the ceremony directly along Lake Mendota with the Madison skyline visible across the water.
Which wedding venues are in downtown Madison?
Downtown options include The Tinsmith, Overture Center for the Arts, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, The Edgewater, Monona Terrace, The Madison Club, Madison Public Library, Park Hotel Madison, AC Hotel Madison Downtown, and Madison Concourse Hotel.
Which Madison-area wedding venues can accommodate 300 or more guests?
Options for larger weddings include Garver Feed Mill, The Edgewater, Monona Terrace, Barnwood Events, Cambridge Winery, Madison Concourse Hotel, Madison Marriott South, Lake Windsor Country Club, Glen Erin Golf Club, Bishops Bay Country Club, and The Oaks Golf Course. Capacity varies based on ceremony versus reception layouts, so couples should always confirm the seated dinner capacity rather than relying only on a venue’s maximum event number.
Which Madison wedding venues have outdoor ceremony spaces?
Outdoor ceremony options include The Eloise, Olbrich Botanical Gardens, The Edgewater, Monona Terrace, Harvest Moon Pond, The Fields Reserve, Four Winds Farm, Barnwood Events, Cambridge Winery, Blackhawk Country Club, Lake Windsor Country Club, Maple Bluff Country Club, Bishops Bay Country Club, and The Oaks Golf Course, among others.
What are some good Madison venues for a winter wedding?
For winter weddings, we especially like venues with attractive indoor ceremony and portrait locations. The Tinsmith, Overture Center, The Eloise, The Edgewater, Monona Terrace, and several downtown hotels give couples strong indoor options when it’s cold, snowy, dark, or simply too unpredictable to depend on outdoor photographs.

Modern Wedding Venues in Madison, WI
Madison’s modern wedding venues range from downtown arts and architectural spaces to purpose-built venues in the countryside surrounding the city. If you love clean design, large windows, natural light, interesting architecture, and spaces that don’t require a lot of additional décor to feel finished, these are some great places to start.
The Eloise — Mount Horeb, Wisconsin
Location: 2212 County Highway JG, Mt Horeb, WI 53572
Capacity: Up to 250 guests
Style: Modern / countryside
Ceremony options: Indoor and outdoor
Best for: Modern design, natural light, outdoor ceremonies, and lots of portrait variety

The Eloise is located in Mount Horeb, about 30 minutes from downtown Madison, and it’s one of our favorite modern wedding venues near Madison. We’ve photographed multiple weddings here, and one of the things we love most about it is that the venue was clearly designed with the flow of an actual wedding day in mind.
Inside, the reception space has tall ceilings, chandeliers, white walls, and a huge wall of windows that brings in beautiful natural light. That makes a big difference from a photography standpoint – especially on a cloudy day, during a winter wedding, or anytime the weather makes outdoor portraits less practical.
The Eloise also has two private getting-ready suites on opposite sides of the venue, which makes it easy for both sides of the wedding party to get ready onsite without accidentally running into each other before the ceremony or first look.
Couples can choose between an indoor ceremony and an outdoor ceremony overlooking the wooded property. Having a dedicated indoor ceremony space is a huge advantage with unpredictable Wisconsin weather because there’s already a beautiful backup plan rather than needing to completely rework the reception room at the last minute.
For portraits, there’s a lot of variety without ever having to leave the property. The woods and prairie areas around The Eloise give you a completely different look from the modern architecture inside, and the open fields can be especially beautiful around sunset. We almost always try to build a few minutes of golden-hour portraits into the timeline when we photograph weddings here.
Good to know: The venue is outside Madison, but still close enough that downtown Madison hotels and transportation can be practical for guests. Mount Horeb also gives the wedding day a quieter countryside feel without requiring couples to travel hours away from the city.

Overture Center for the Arts — Downtown Madison, Wisconsin
Location: 201 State St, Madison, WI 53703
Wedding capacity: Up to approximately 350 guests, depending on the space and setup
Style: Modern / architectural / downtown
Best for: Downtown weddings, dramatic architecture, indoor portraits, and year-round weddings

Overture Center for the Arts is one of the most distinctive wedding venues in downtown Madison. The combination of soaring windows, grand staircases, suspended walkways, clean architectural lines, and views toward the Wisconsin State Capitol gives you photo opportunities that are completely different from almost any other venue in the area.
We especially love photographing weddings at Overture because there are so many good indoor options. Wisconsin weather is unpredictable, and there aren’t many venues where we can create bright, natural-light portraits indoors without feeling like we’re settling for a backup location.
The Promenade is one of our favorite parts of the building. Its large windows bring in beautiful natural light, while the staircases, upper levels, and suspended walkways give us a lot of different compositions without having to move the couple or wedding party very far. It also works beautifully for cocktail hour, with views through the larger Overture spaces and toward the Capitol.
Location is another major advantage. Overture sits directly on State Street, only a short walk from the Capitol Square. That means we can easily incorporate downtown Madison into wedding portraits – the Capitol, State Street, city architecture, and other nearby locations — without adding a long transportation block to the wedding-day timeline.
It’s also an especially practical option for couples with a lot of out-of-town guests. Hotels, restaurants, bars, parking ramps, and entertainment are all within walking distance.
Good to know: Overture has several different event spaces rather than one single “wedding capacity.” The venue currently accommodates weddings ranging from intimate celebrations to events of roughly 350 people, so it’s worth comparing the individual rooms and layouts to suit your needs.
Best photography feature: Some of the strongest indoor natural light of any downtown Madison wedding venue. That makes Overture particularly appealing for winter weddings, rainy wedding days, and couples who want a modern editorial look without relying entirely on outdoor portraits.

Olbrich Botanical Gardens — Madison, Wisconsin
Location: 3330 Atwood Ave, Madison, WI 53704
Reception capacity: Up to 150 guests in Evjue Commons
Ceremony capacity: Up to 120 guests in the Event Garden or Atrium
Style: Garden / botanical / modern
Best for: Garden weddings, outdoor ceremonies, greenery, and couples who want lots of natural scenery without leaving Madison
Olbrich Botanical Gardens is one of the most unique wedding venues in Madison because the gardens themselves become a major part of the experience. Instead of needing to travel somewhere else for greenery and portraits, couples have access to a huge variety of landscaped spaces right outside the venue.
During garden season, weddings can include a ceremony in the Event Garden, which gives couples a landscaped outdoor setting with flowers, lawn, brick pathways, and a pergola. One thing couples should know is that the Event Garden remains part of the public gardens, so it isn’t completely closed off from other visitors during the ceremony.
Olbrich also has one of the more interesting indoor ceremony options in Madison. The Atrium has glass walls and a vaulted glass ceiling, allowing natural light and greenery to remain part of the setting even when the ceremony needs to move indoors. For Wisconsin weddings, that kind of rain plan is a significant advantage.
Receptions are typically held in Evjue Commons, which accommodates up to 150 guests for dining and dancing. The room has a full wall of glass overlooking the gardens and opens directly onto the Lussier Terrace, giving guests easy indoor-outdoor access throughout the evening.
For smaller weddings, the Bolz Conservatory can also host intimate ceremonies. The tropical setting is especially interesting for winter weddings because couples can have greenery and a completely different visual atmosphere even when Madison is covered in snow.
From a photography standpoint, the biggest advantage of Olbrich is variety. You can create wedding portraits that feel lush and natural, architectural, tropical, or garden-inspired without spending a large portion of the timeline driving between locations.
Good to know: Olbrich’s wedding options change somewhat by season. Outdoor Event Garden ceremonies are available during garden season and are weather dependent, while the Atrium becomes particularly important during shoulder-season and winter weddings. Couples should check the current wedding package and seasonal rules directly with Olbrich when planning.
Madison Museum of Contemporary Art — MMoCA — Madison, Wisconsin
Location: 227 State St, Madison, WI 53703
Reception capacity: Approximately 80–100 guests for a seated dinner or up to 175 for a cocktail-style reception
Style: Contemporary / modern / downtown
Best for: Intimate weddings, rooftop celebrations, modern architecture, art, and downtown Madison views
The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art is a great option for couples who want a wedding venue that feels distinctly urban and connected to downtown Madison.
The museum was designed by architect César Pelli, and the building itself gives you a much different backdrop than a traditional ballroom or barn venue. Glass, clean lines, open staircases, contemporary art, and views of downtown all become part of the wedding environment.
One of MMoCA’s biggest features is its Rooftop Sculpture Garden. Located above State Street, the rooftop gives guests views of downtown Madison and the Wisconsin State Capitol while still feeling separated from the activity below. It works especially well for couples who like the idea of an outdoor wedding but want something that feels more urban and architectural than a garden or countryside setting.
The Rooftop Sculpture Garden can accommodate approximately 80–100 guests for a seated dinner or up to 175 for a standing reception. An adjacent indoor Rooftop Lounge provides another option for smaller gatherings and gives couples some indoor flexibility.
Another major advantage is the location. MMoCA sits directly on State Street between the Capitol and the UW-Madison campus. For wedding portraits, that opens up a huge amount of variety within walking distance – Capitol Square, State Street, downtown architecture, and the museum itself can all be incorporated without spending much of the wedding day traveling.
MMoCA is particularly worth considering for couples planning a smaller or mid-sized wedding who care more about architecture, art, location, and guest experience than having a traditional ballroom.
Good to know: Because MMoCA is an active contemporary art museum, exhibitions and artwork can change. That means the exact visual environment may look different from one wedding to another – something we would actually consider part of the appeal for couples who want a venue that feels a little less predictable.
Industrial Wedding Venues Near Madison, Wisconsin
Madison and the surrounding area have several wedding venues inside restored warehouses and historic commercial buildings. These spaces are a great fit for couples who like exposed brick, original wood, tall ceilings, large windows, and architecture that already gives the wedding a strong visual identity.
Within Madison, The Tinsmith and Garver Feed Mill offer two very different takes on the industrial style. Nearby, The Lageret in Stoughton and The Loft at 132 in Sun Prairie give couples additional options within a short drive of the city.
The Tinsmith — Madison, Wisconsin
Location: 828 E Main St, Madison, WI 53703
Wedding capacity: Up to 200 guests for an onsite ceremony and seated reception
Style: Modern / industrial / greenhouse-inspired
Ceremony options: Indoor
Best for: Natural light, downtown weddings, winter weddings, and couples who want the entire day in one location

The Tinsmith is one of our favorite wedding venues in downtown Madison, especially from a photography standpoint. The building combines its industrial history with a much brighter, more modern feel than you might expect from a converted warehouse.
Our favorite part is the four-season solarium. We sometimes describe it as a greenhouse even though it technically isn’t one — it has that same light-filled feeling, with plants, glass, and soft natural light coming in from above and around the space. The walls and ceiling help diffuse that light, which makes it one of the best indoor portrait locations we’ve found at a Madison wedding venue.
That’s especially valuable in Wisconsin. If it’s freezing outside, raining, snowing, or simply too hot to spend a lot of time outdoors, couples can still get bright, natural-looking wedding portraits without leaving the venue.
The Tinsmith also has separate spaces for each part of the wedding day. Ceremonies take place in the Front Hall, cocktail hour often moves into the solarium, and dinner and dancing happen in the Main Hall. Because the ceremony and reception aren’t happening in the same room, there’s no need for guests to wait while the space is completely flipped between the two.
The Main Hall has 23-foot ceilings, skylights, original wood floors, and a large custom bar. The venue also includes a private client suite for getting ready, so it’s possible to keep almost the entire wedding day in one location.
Location is another big advantage. The Tinsmith is on East Main Street, just east of the Capitol, so downtown Madison portrait locations are easy to incorporate into the timeline. The Capitol, James Madison Park, Tenney Park, and other downtown locations are all nearby.
Good to know: The Tinsmith accommodates up to 200 guests when both the ceremony and seated reception are held onsite. If the ceremony is held somewhere else, the venue can accommodate a larger seated reception by using both the Main Hall and Front Hall.
Our photographer’s take: If you’re planning a fall, winter, or early-spring wedding and still want bright wedding photos, The Tinsmith should be high on your list. Few Madison venues offer this many attractive indoor photo options without making the day feel like you’re relying on a rain plan.

The Lageret — Stoughton, Wisconsin
Location: 515 E Main St, Stoughton, WI 53589
Wedding capacity: Up to 250 guests
Style: Historic / industrial / rustic
Ceremony options: Indoor
Best for: Historic architecture, large weddings, indoor ceremonies, and couples who want ceremony and reception under one roof

The Lageret is a former tobacco warehouse in downtown Stoughton, just south of Madison. Of all the industrial wedding venues in the area, this is one where the history of the building still plays a major role in how the space looks and feels.
Inside, you’ll find original wood floors, massive wood beams, cream-city brick walls, tall windows, and a huge amount of open space. The first and second floors together provide approximately 18,000 square feet for a single event, which gives couples much more room to spread out than they might expect from a historic downtown building.
The second floor contains both the ceremony and dining areas. The ceremony space accommodates up to 250 guests, and the dining room runs nearly the full length of the building. That means couples can have the ceremony and reception onsite while still giving the two parts of the day distinct spaces.
From a photography standpoint, the Lageret has a moodier look than venues like The Tinsmith or The Eloise. The brick, dark wood, tall windows, string lights, and historic details create a warm atmosphere that photographs especially well once candles, florals, and reception lighting are added.
The venue also has two private partner suites that can be used before the ceremony, along with a first-floor bar and dance area. Having those separate spaces helps keep people from constantly moving in and out of the ceremony or dining areas while everything is being prepared.
One thing we particularly like about venues like The Lageret is that the building itself creates so much visual interest. Couples don’t need to completely transform the room for it to feel intentional – the beams, brick, windows, wood floors, and scale of the space already give photographs a lot of character.
Good to know: The Lageret has its own private parking area with approximately 80 spaces, which is unusual for a historic downtown venue. The building also has an elevator between the first and second floors.
Our photographer’s take: The Lageret is especially worth considering if you like the character of a historic building but still need enough room for a larger guest list. It also works well for couples who want an indoor wedding where the architecture itself becomes part of the design rather than simply serving as a blank ballroom.

The Loft at 132 — Sun Prairie, Wisconsin
Location: 132 Market St STE 200, Sun Prairie, WI 53590
Wedding capacity: Up to 135 guests
Style: Modern / loft / rooftop
Ceremony options: Rooftop or indoor
Best for: Smaller weddings, rooftop ceremonies, sunset portraits, and a walkable downtown setting

The Loft at 132 is located in downtown Sun Prairie, just outside Madison, and offers something relatively unusual among wedding venues in the area: a rooftop ceremony space.
The venue includes a second-floor ballroom as well as an outdoor rooftop courtyard with its own bar and ceremony area. Couples can hold the ceremony on the rooftop and move indoors for the reception, or use the second-floor space as the ceremony location when Wisconsin weather doesn’t cooperate.
We’ve photographed rooftop ceremonies here, and the outdoor space gives the wedding a distinctly different feel from most traditional Madison-area venues. The surrounding downtown buildings create a more urban backdrop, and the rooftop is especially nice later in the day as the light starts to soften.
Inside, the second-floor ballroom combines white walls, cream-city brick, dark walnut flooring, and large windows. Because the room is relatively neutral, couples can take the décor in a lot of different directions without competing with an overly specific venue style.
The venue also has a private wedding suite, onsite parking, elevator access, and full-service bars on both the second floor and rooftop. There are also restaurants, bars, and several hotel options nearby, which can make the guest experience easier for couples who want everything concentrated around downtown Sun Prairie.
For portraits, the rooftop itself gives you an obvious option, but there are also green spaces and downtown locations within walking distance. That means couples can get several different looks without putting a large transportation break into the wedding timeline.
Good to know: The rooftop ceremony space has an indoor backup option on the second floor, which is something we would always pay attention to when evaluating an outdoor ceremony venue in Wisconsin.
Photography note: Our interior ballroom photographs below were taken before the venue’s 2025 remodel. We’ve kept them because they still show the overall layout and wedding-day experience, but couples should visit The Loft at 132’s current website for the most up-to-date look at the interior finishes.
Our photographer’s take: The Loft at 132 makes the most sense for couples who want something more intimate than many of the larger Madison venues. The 135-person maximum also means the rooftop, ballroom, and surrounding downtown area feel connected to the wedding rather than getting lost inside an oversized event space.

Garver Feed Mill — Madison, Wisconsin
Location: 3241 Garver Green, Madison, WI 53704
Wedding capacity: Approximately 300–320 guests for a seated dinner in the Atrium; up to 500 for a cocktail-style reception
Style: Historic / industrial
Ceremony options: Indoor, with limited outdoor space available depending on the event
Best for: Larger weddings, historic architecture, industrial style, and couples who want food, bar, and event services onsite
Garver Feed Mill is one of Madison’s most recognizable historic industrial buildings and one of the larger wedding venues within the city itself. The restored mill combines exposed brick, original architectural details, enormous historic windows, and a large open Atrium that can be configured for both ceremonies and receptions.
The Atrium is the primary wedding space and accommodates roughly 300–320 guests for a seated dinner. That makes Garver particularly interesting for couples who love industrial architecture but have a guest list that is too large for some of Madison’s smaller downtown venues.
Photography-wise, the historic windows are probably the defining feature of the room. They bring natural light into a space that otherwise has a much moodier industrial feel, and the combination of brick, steel, high ceilings, and large windows gives photographs a strong sense of place.
Wedding rentals also include access to several additional spaces. The Garver Lounge can be used as part of the wedding-day flow, and couples receive a private hospitality suite with a bathroom and makeup counter. The Atrium also connects to a private patio, giving guests an outdoor option without requiring the entire wedding to depend on good weather.
Another practical difference at Garver is that food and beverage service is handled onsite. For couples who would rather have the venue coordinate more of those pieces rather than assembling separate catering and bar vendors, that can simplify planning.
Garver also has free onsite parking – something that can be surprisingly valuable at a Madison wedding with a large guest count.
The venue is located on Madison’s east side near Olbrich Botanical Gardens, and its location makes it possible to combine the industrial look of Garver with completely different portrait environments nearby if the timeline allows.
Our photographer’s take: Garver is one of the strongest options in Madison for couples who want a genuinely historic industrial building but need considerably more capacity than venues such as The Tinsmith or The Loft at 132. The architecture provides plenty of visual character on its own, so it works particularly well for couples who want the venue itself to be a significant part of the overall wedding design.
10 South — Janesville, Wisconsin
Location: 10 S High St, Janesville, WI 53548
Wedding capacity: Up to approximately 375 guests
Style: Historic / industrial / urban
Ceremony options: Indoor
Best for: Large weddings, exposed brick, historic architecture, and couples willing to look about an hour south of Madison
10 South is located in downtown Janesville, roughly an hour south of Madison, inside a restored historic building with exposed brick, original architectural details, large windows, and an industrial-meets-elegant feel.
The venue is a good option for couples who like the character of Madison-area industrial spaces but need a larger guest capacity. With room for approximately 375 guests, 10 South can accommodate weddings that may be too large for some of the smaller historic venues closer to Madison.
Inside, the brick walls, tall ceilings, wood details, and large windows give the space plenty of visual character without requiring couples to completely transform the room with décor. That can be especially appealing for couples who want the venue itself to contribute to the overall look of the wedding.
Its downtown Janesville location also gives couples additional options for portraits outside the venue, including historic architecture and urban streets within a relatively compact area.
Our photographer’s take: 10 South makes the most sense for couples who specifically want a larger historic or industrial venue and are comfortable expanding their search beyond Dane County. Its biggest advantages are guest capacity and the character of the building itself.
Historic Madison, WI Wedding Venues
Historic wedding venues around Madison range from private clubs and university buildings to restored warehouses and downtown cultural spaces. What we like about these venues is that the architecture itself becomes part of the wedding — original brick, woodwork, staircases, windows, and other details often give photographs a stronger sense of place than a more neutral event room.
Some of the historic venues in this guide are located directly downtown, while others are in nearby communities such as Stoughton and Janesville. If historic character is important to you, it’s also worth considering how much of the original building is visible inside the actual ceremony and reception spaces, rather than judging the venue only from its exterior.
The Edgewater — Madison, Wisconsin
Location: 1001 Wisconsin Pl, Madison, WI 53703
Wedding capacity: Up to approximately 350 guests in the Grand Ballroom
Style: Lakefront hotel / classic / modern
Ceremony options: Indoor and outdoor
Best for: Lake views, downtown weddings, onsite lodging, and couples who want the entire wedding weekend in one location

The Edgewater is one of Madison’s most recognizable wedding venues, sitting directly on the shore of Lake Mendota just a few blocks from the Capitol. We’ve photographed weddings throughout the property, and one of the biggest advantages is the amount of variety couples can have without ever leaving the hotel.
For larger weddings, the Grand Ballroom accommodates approximately 350 guests while still leaving room for a dance floor and bars. The ballroom has tall windows overlooking Lake Mendota, and the adjoining terraces give guests an outdoor space with lake views throughout the reception.
Outdoor ceremonies can also take advantage of the Grand Plaza, a large waterfront space between the hotel and Lake Mendota. We’ve photographed ceremonies here, and it creates a distinctly Madison backdrop – the lake is immediately behind the ceremony rather than simply visible in the distance.
The Edgewater also works well for smaller weddings. The Mendota Ballroom accommodates groups of up to roughly 120 and has an adjoining gallery that works well for cocktail hour. Smaller spaces such as the Sky Bar offer some of the best elevated views of Lake Mendota, downtown Madison, the Capitol, and the UW campus.
From a photography standpoint, the variety is one of the biggest advantages. We can create portraits along the lake, around the hotel architecture, on elevated terraces, and in nearby downtown Madison without building significant travel time into the schedule. The property also gives us indoor options when weather makes outdoor portraits difficult.
Having hotel rooms onsite is another major benefit. Couples can get ready at the hotel, hold the ceremony and reception there, and give out-of-town guests a place to stay without arranging transportation between multiple locations. The Edgewater also has several dedicated spaces that can be used for getting ready, including the Madison Room, suites, guest rooms, and Sky Bar.
Good to know: The Edgewater has several wedding spaces with very different capacities, so “capacity” depends heavily on which room you choose. The Grand Ballroom accommodates approximately 350 for a typical wedding setup, while the Mendota Ballroom and rooftop spaces are better suited to smaller celebrations.
Our photographer’s take: Few Madison venues offer this combination of lakefront portraits, downtown access, indoor photo options, reception spaces, and guest lodging in one property. It is especially useful for couples who want a wedding weekend that feels distinctly Madison without asking guests to travel between several locations.

Monona Terrace — Madison, Wisconsin
Location: 1 John Nolen Dr, Madison, WI 53703
Wedding capacity: Up to 600 guests in the full Madison Ballroom; smaller wedding spaces accommodate approximately 140–350 depending on the room and layout
Style: Modern / architectural / lakefront
Ceremony options: Indoor and rooftop
Best for: Lake Monona views, rooftop ceremonies, large weddings, and iconic Madison architecture

Monona Terrace is one of the most distinctive wedding venues in Madison. Sitting between downtown and Lake Monona, the building combines Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired architecture, huge lake views, rooftop gardens, and enough event-space options to accommodate everything from relatively intimate celebrations to some of the largest weddings in the area.
One of our favorite features for wedding photography is the William T. Evjue Rooftop Gardens. The roof gives couples an outdoor setting with views across Lake Monona while still feeling connected to downtown Madison. It also provides a completely different portrait environment from the interior spaces without requiring any transportation.
For couples planning an outdoor ceremony, the rooftop includes multiple ceremony areas. The West Circle can accommodate approximately 250 guests in a theater-style setup, while the larger Center area can accommodate substantially more.
Inside, Monona Terrace offers several reception spaces rather than one single ballroom. The Community Terrace is particularly interesting for weddings because its glass walls overlook Lake Monona. It accommodates approximately 250 guests for dinner and dancing and provides a much more intimate lakefront experience than some of the building’s larger rooms.
The Grand Terrace can accommodate approximately 350 guests for dinner, while the Hall of Ideas works well for weddings of roughly 160–290 depending on how much of the room is used. For very large weddings, the complete Madison Ballroom can accommodate up to approximately 600 guests for dinner.
That range is one of Monona Terrace’s biggest strengths. A couple planning a 150-person wedding and a couple planning a 500-person wedding can both realistically consider the venue without the space necessarily feeling mismatched to the guest count.
For portraits, there are also plenty of options nearby. The rooftop and lakefront are obvious choices, but the Capitol Square is close enough to incorporate into the day if couples want a second, more urban look.
Our photographer’s take: Monona Terrace is especially strong for couples who want Madison itself to feel like part of the wedding. The combination of Lake Monona, the rooftop gardens, downtown architecture, and the Capitol gives us a lot of visual variety without needing to leave the immediate area.

The Madison Club — Madison, Wisconsin
Location: 5 E Wilson St, Madison, WI 53703
Wedding capacity: Up to approximately 225 guests
Style: Historic / classic / downtown
Ceremony options: Indoor
Best for: Classic downtown weddings, smaller-to-mid-sized celebrations, lake views, and couples who want an all-inclusive venue experience
The Madison Club is a historic private club in the heart of downtown Madison, only a few blocks from the Capitol and Lake Monona. It’s a good option for couples who want a more traditional or classic wedding setting while still having all of the advantages of a downtown location.
Unlike venues centered around one large ballroom, The Madison Club has several event spaces with different personalities. That gives couples more flexibility to use separate rooms for the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing rather than asking one room to serve every purpose throughout the day.
The Atrium is the Club’s largest event space and accommodates more than 200 guests. One feature we especially like from a photography perspective is the glass-enclosed ceiling, which brings natural light into a room that still feels formal enough for a traditional wedding reception.
Other spaces include the Lake Room, which accommodates up to approximately 144 guests, and the Terrace Room, which also accommodates about 144 and has floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Lake Monona. The Capitol Room is a smaller option with views toward the Wisconsin State Capitol.
Those views give The Madison Club an interesting advantage: depending on the room, couples can incorporate either Lake Monona or the Capitol into the experience without leaving the building.
Its downtown location also gives us plenty of options for portraits outside the venue. Capitol Square, the Monona Terrace area, downtown streets, and other architectural locations can all be reached relatively easily, which makes it possible to create a lot of variety without spending much of the wedding day in transportation.
The Madison Club also offers getting-ready spaces, onsite parking, and full-service wedding packages that include many of the pieces couples would otherwise need to coordinate separately.
Good to know: Although The Madison Club is a private club, couples do not necessarily need to already be members to have a wedding there. Its wedding packages can include the required membership.
Our photographer’s take: The Madison Club makes a lot of sense for couples who like historic or traditional wedding spaces but still want natural light and downtown portrait options. It also works particularly well for couples who want several distinct spaces throughout the day rather than one large ballroom being repeatedly rearranged.
Memorial Union — Madison, Wisconsin
Location: 800 Langdon St, Madison, WI 53706
Wedding capacity: Up to approximately 220 guests at round tables in Great Hall; other rooms accommodate smaller celebrations
Style: Historic / lakefront / University of Wisconsin
Ceremony options: Indoor event spaces
Best for: UW-Madison alumni, Lake Mendota views, historic architecture, and couples who want a wedding that feels unmistakably Madison

For couples with a connection to UW–Madison, Memorial Union is hard to replicate. The building sits directly on Lake Mendota in the heart of campus and combines historic architecture, university tradition, and some of the most recognizable views in Madison.
The two primary banquet spaces for weddings at Memorial Union are Great Hall and Tripp Commons.
Great Hall is the larger of the two and can accommodate approximately 220 guests when set with round tables. The room has a much more formal, historic feeling than most modern wedding venues in Madison, making it a great option for couples who want a traditional reception setting without using a hotel ballroom.
Tripp Commons is a smaller historic room that works well for more intimate weddings. Its architectural details and campus setting give it a distinctly different atmosphere from many purpose-built event venues.
One of Memorial Union’s biggest advantages is everything surrounding the reception space. The building sits directly on Lake Mendota, giving couples easy access to lakeside portraits, campus architecture, and some of Madison’s best-known scenery.
The Memorial Union Terrace is especially iconic. The lake, colorful Terrace chairs, shoreline, and surrounding campus create photographs that immediately feel connected to Madison and UW–Madison. Alumni couples often have a lot of personal history tied to this part of campus, which can make using it for portraits feel more meaningful than simply choosing a scenic location.
The campus also offers a huge variety of additional portrait locations within walking distance. Bascom Hill, Science Hall, Library Mall, the Lakeshore Path, and other UW landmarks can all potentially be incorporated depending on the timeline and access.
Good to know: Wisconsin Union event spaces have membership and reservation requirements, so couples without an existing UW or Union connection should confirm current eligibility and membership requirements directly with Wisconsin Union Event Services.
Our photographer’s take: Memorial Union is less about choosing a generic “lakefront venue” and more about choosing a place that is deeply connected to Madison and the university. For couples who met at UW, attended school here, or simply love the campus, the location can add a layer of meaning that another waterfront venue can’t necessarily reproduce.
Goodman Community Center — Madison, Wisconsin
Location: 214 Waubesa St, Madison, WI 53704
Wedding capacity: Up to approximately 216 guests in the combined Bea & Lau Christensen Rooms
Style: Historic industrial / modern / community-focused
Ceremony options: Indoor
Best for: Industrial architecture, east-side Madison weddings, onsite catering, and couples looking for a flexible nontraditional venue

Goodman Community Center is a unique wedding venue on Madison’s east side, located in the Atwood neighborhood and housed partly inside renovated historic industrial buildings.
For larger weddings, the Bea and Lau Christensen Rooms in the Brassworks building can be combined into one approximately 4,700-square-foot event space. The room seats a little over 200 guests and includes exposed brick, steel columns and beams, skylights, high ceilings, two built-in bars, and dance floors.
One thing we like about Goodman from a photography standpoint is that it has more character than a typical multipurpose event room. The industrial details and large windows give us visual elements to work with indoors, while the Atwood neighborhood and nearby east-side Madison locations provide additional portrait options without requiring a long drive.
Couples can also host both the wedding ceremony and reception at Goodman, which makes the day much simpler logistically. Smaller rooms are available for getting ready, storage, or additional wedding-day needs, while the larger event rooms can handle the main celebration.
Food and beverage service is handled onsite through Goodman Community Center, so couples don’t need to coordinate a separate caterer and bar service. Wedding rentals also help support the nonprofit community programs offered through the Center, which may be meaningful for couples looking for a venue with a broader community mission.
Good to know: Goodman has two buildings — Ironworks and Brassworks — located about a block apart. If your wedding uses spaces in one particular building, make that very clear on invitations, your wedding website, and guest communications.
Our photographer’s take: Goodman is worth considering if you like the texture and character of an industrial wedding venue but want something that feels less formal than a traditional ballroom. The brick, steel, windows, and skylights give the larger Brassworks spaces plenty of personality without requiring couples to completely transform the room with décor.

Madison Public Library — Downtown Madison, Wisconsin
Location: 201 W Mifflin St, Madison, WI 53703
Wedding capacity: Up to 250 guests, depending on layout
Style: Modern / architectural / downtown
Ceremony options: Indoor, with seasonal outdoor patio access
Best for: Modern downtown weddings, natural light, smaller-to-mid-sized celebrations, and couples who want something genuinely different from a traditional wedding venue

The Madison Public Library may not be the first place people think of when they start searching for wedding venues, but the third floor of Central Library is actually one of the more interesting modern event spaces in downtown Madison.
The wedding rental includes exclusive access to the entire third floor, including the Community Room, Madison Room, Art Gallery, bathrooms, and seasonal patio. That gives couples several distinct spaces to work with throughout the day rather than having the entire wedding take place in one room.
The Madison Room is probably the most visually distinctive space. It has floor-to-ceiling windows, downtown views, changing art installations, and a sculptural ceiling that gives the room a much more architectural feel than a typical hotel or conference space.
The Community Room also has floor-to-ceiling windows and can be combined with the adjoining event space to accommodate groups of up to approximately 250 people.
Natural light is one of the venue’s biggest photography advantages. Between the large windows and light-colored modern interiors, there are useful indoor options even if the weather outside isn’t cooperating.
The location is another major benefit. Central Library sits just off State Street and only a few blocks from the Wisconsin State Capitol, so couples have a huge variety of downtown portrait locations within walking distance. The Capitol, State Street, Overture Center area, and surrounding downtown architecture can all be incorporated without spending a large part of the wedding day traveling between locations.
Current wedding packages also include getting-ready space, tables and chairs, furniture setup and teardown, audiovisual equipment, and support from the library’s event staff.
Good to know: Wedding rentals are generally offered on select Saturdays from spring through December, so this venue has more date restrictions than many traditional wedding venues. Couples should check current availability before getting too far into planning.
Our photographer’s take: Madison Public Library is a particularly good fit for couples who want a downtown wedding but don’t necessarily want a hotel ballroom. The architecture and art give the space its own personality, and the location makes it easy to combine clean, modern indoor photographs with classic downtown Madison portraits.
Rustic Wedding Venues Near Madison, Wisconsin
Couples looking for a barn or countryside wedding don’t have to travel far from Madison. The area has several venues that combine open fields, mature trees, ponds, woods, and outdoor ceremony spaces with modern amenities such as heating and air conditioning, indoor restrooms, getting-ready suites, and dedicated weather backups.
Harvest Moon Pond, The Fields Reserve, Four Winds Farm, Barnwood Events, and Cambridge Winery all offer outdoor scenery while still giving couples practical indoor options if Wisconsin weather changes the plan. These venues are especially worth considering if you want a large portion of your wedding photos to feel natural and outdoorsy without adding extra portrait locations to the timeline.
Harvest Moon Pond — Poynette, Wisconsin
Location: N 3540, WI-22, Poynette, WI 53955
Wedding capacity: Up to 200 guests
Style: Barn / rustic / countryside
Ceremony options: Multiple indoor and outdoor options
Best for: Outdoor ceremonies, lots of portrait variety, barn weddings, and couples who want the entire day on one private property

The Harvest Moon Pond is located north of Madison on a private 18-acre property, and one of the things we like most about photographing weddings here is how many different environments are available without ever needing to leave the venue.
There are several ceremony options. The willow-tree ceremony site is probably the most recognizable and accommodates up to 200 guests. Couples can also choose the Pond View Pergola, which overlooks the pond and surrounding lawn, or the outdoor fireplace for smaller ceremonies.
If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the barn loft provides an indoor ceremony option. Having a true indoor backup matters in Wisconsin, especially for couples planning spring or fall weddings when the forecast can change quickly.
For portraits, the property gives us a lot to work with. The willow trees, pond, open fields, walking trails, wooded areas, old sheep barn, and other parts of the grounds all create different backgrounds within a short walk of one another.
That variety is useful on a wedding day because we don’t have to spend 20 or 30 minutes driving somewhere else just to give couples a different look in their photos.
The outdoor patio overlooking the pond is also a nice transition space between ceremony and reception. Guests can use it for cocktail hour, yard games, drinks, and the outdoor fireplace while the reception takes place inside the barn.
The venue is designed to work year-round, with heating and air conditioning inside, two private dressing rooms, indoor restrooms, paved parking, and bar service onsite.
Good to know: While the venue can accommodate up to 200 people overall, the different indoor spaces have their own capacities. The main level of the barn accommodates approximately 125 guests, while the loft seats approximately 96 at round tables. Couples with larger guest counts should talk through the exact dinner and reception layout with the venue rather than relying only on the 200-person maximum.
Our photographer’s take: Harvest Moon Pond works especially well for couples who want their wedding photos to feel outdoorsy and natural without building multiple locations into the timeline. We can move from the willow trees to the pond, fields, trails, or barn in just a few minutes, which gives us a lot of variety while keeping the wedding day relaxed.

The Fields Reserve — Stoughton, Wisconsin
Location: 2479 Glenn Dr, Stoughton, WI 53589
Wedding capacity: Up to 300 guests for the reception; indoor Ceremony Barn accommodates up to 250
Style: Modern barn / rustic / countryside
Ceremony options: Indoor and outdoor
Best for: Large barn weddings, outdoor ceremonies, wooded portraits, and couples who want a reliable indoor weather backup

The Fields Reserve is located on 20 private acres just outside Madison near Stoughton. Unlike a converted agricultural barn, the venue was purpose-built for weddings, so couples get the rustic look of a barn venue without giving up things like heating and air conditioning, indoor restrooms, accessibility, dedicated getting-ready spaces, and modern event infrastructure.
The property has separate Ceremony and Reception Barns, which is one of its biggest wedding-day advantages.
For outdoor ceremonies, there is a dedicated wooded ceremony site with a stone setting, handcrafted wooden arch, and white benches. The surrounding trees provide a lot of shade, and there is a small pond behind the ceremony area.
If the weather changes, couples don’t have to move the ceremony into the reception room. Instead, the dedicated Ceremony Barn serves as the indoor backup and accommodates up to approximately 250 guests.
That separation makes the transition into cocktail hour and dinner much easier because the Reception Barn can already be completely set and ready before the ceremony begins.
The Reception Barn accommodates up to approximately 300 guests and includes exposed wood trusses, spruce walls, vintage chandeliers, a large bar, and a covered patio overlooking the property. The patio and surrounding grounds are especially nice later in the day when the light starts to soften.
From a photography standpoint, one of the biggest advantages of The Fields Reserve is the contrast between the buildings and the surrounding property. The barns have light exteriors and warm wood interiors, while the woods, rolling hills, mature trees, pond, and open fields give us plenty of outdoor portrait options.
We especially like having those different environments available without putting the couple and wedding party on a bus and leaving the property.
The venue also includes two private getting-ready suites, and both the Ceremony Barn and Reception Barn are heated and air conditioned. That makes The Fields Reserve a realistic year-round option rather than a venue that only works comfortably during Wisconsin’s warmest months.
Our photographer’s take: The Fields Reserve is one of the better choices near Madison for couples who like the barn-wedding aesthetic but don’t want to sacrifice practical amenities or a solid weather backup. The separate ceremony and reception buildings also make the day flow more naturally than barn venues where the same room has to be flipped between every part of the wedding.

Four Winds Farm — Fitchburg, Wisconsin
Location: 5735 Adams Road, Fitchburg, WI
Wedding capacity: Up to 200 guests
Style: Historic barn / modern rustic / working farm
Ceremony options: Indoor and multiple outdoor options
Best for: Barn weddings close to Madison, outdoor ceremonies, natural light, working-farm scenery, and couples who value sustainability

Four Winds Farm is an 86-acre working farm in Fitchburg, just minutes from Madison. The property combines a restored historic Wisconsin dairy barn with fields, prairie, gardens, hop vines, pasture, and other elements of the farm’s regenerative-agriculture landscape.
The barn dates to the 1930s and underwent a ground-up renovation before reopening in 2020. Its main event space, The Loft, accommodates up to 200 guests for ceremonies and receptions and features exposed wood beams, a vaulted ceiling, oak hardwood floors, and a large amount of natural light.
One of the things that makes Four Winds different from many barn venues around Madison is the variety of spaces available throughout the property. In addition to The Loft, the barn includes a two-story Atrium with 50 feet of north-facing windows, a Library lounge, a Kitchen with a large marble island and fireplace, a furnished outdoor Patio, and private getting-ready suites with bathrooms, changing areas, and kitchenettes.
Couples can also choose from multiple outdoor ceremony locations around the farm. One of the more unusual options is set against hop vines that can grow to approximately 20 feet tall during the season. The surrounding property includes restored prairie, oak savannah, pasture, gardens, orchards, and other working-farm landscapes, giving couples plenty of variety without needing to leave the venue for portraits.
From a photography standpoint, the combination of the bright barn interior and the outdoor property is especially appealing. The tall windows and open Loft provide useful indoor options when Wisconsin weather makes outdoor portraits difficult, while the farm gives couples a completely different natural look just outside the building.
Four Winds also offers more flexibility with catering than some all-inclusive venues. Couples can use a licensed outside caterer, and the venue has a fully equipped kitchen available for food-service professionals. Beverage service, however, is provided through Four Winds Farm rather than brought in independently. The venue is also fully accessible, with an elevator and accessible restrooms.
Good to know: Four Winds Farm is a working farm as well as an event venue, and venue rentals help support its regenerative-agriculture, arts and cultural programming, and restoration of native Wisconsin ecosystems. For couples who care about sustainability or want their venue choice to support a broader mission, that is a genuinely distinctive part of the property.
Our photographer’s take: Four Winds Farm is particularly compelling for couples who want a true barn and countryside setting without traveling far outside Madison. The light-filled Loft gives you a strong indoor option, while the farm, prairie, hop vines, and surrounding landscape provide a lot of visual variety outdoors.

Barnwood Events — Madison, Wisconsin
Location: 3230 Larsen Rd, Madison, WI 53711
Wedding capacity: Up to 300 guests; approximately 250–260 comfortably seated in the main hall, with additional space available on the four-season porch
Style: Modern barn / rustic / wooded
Ceremony options: Multiple indoor and outdoor options
Best for: Large weddings, outdoor ceremonies, wooded portraits, onsite lodging, and couples who want a barn setting without leaving Madison

Barnwood Events is one of the relatively rare barn-style wedding venues located within Madison itself. The property sits just south of the Beltline next to Capital Springs Centennial State Park, so it feels much more secluded than its Madison address might suggest.
One of the biggest advantages is the variety of ceremony locations. Couples can get married beneath the large willow tree, under a more than 200-year-old oak tree, on the back lawn, on the front patio, or indoors.
The willow tree is the venue’s largest outdoor ceremony option and can accommodate up to approximately 300 guests. For smaller weddings, the back lawn creates a more intimate setting and makes the transition into cocktail hour especially easy.
The four-season porch is one of the most useful features from a Wisconsin-weather standpoint. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring in plenty of natural light while still giving couples a true indoor ceremony option. It can accommodate approximately 220 guests for a ceremony.
For larger indoor ceremonies, the main hall can be configured so guests face the large barn doors, allowing couples to keep the ceremony indoors without needing to squeeze everyone into a smaller backup room.
The reception space combines the scale and character of a barn with the practical features of a modern event venue. The property includes a large main hall, full-service bar, catering kitchen, audiovisual system, dance floor, getting-ready suites, indoor restrooms, heating and air conditioning, and onsite parking.
From a photography standpoint, the outdoor spaces are probably Barnwood’s biggest strength. The mature trees, wooded property, willow, oak trees, lawns, and nearby natural areas provide a lot of portrait variety without leaving the venue.
The four-season porch is also helpful when the weather isn’t cooperating because the windows give us an indoor space that still feels bright and connected to the outdoors.
Barnwood also has a renovated 1800s farmhouse available for wedding-weekend lodging. It sleeps up to approximately 14 guests, giving couples another option for keeping close family or the wedding party onsite.
Good to know: The indoor grand hall comfortably seats approximately 250–260 with additional seating possible in the covered porch. If you’re planning a wedding near the maximum capacity, ask to see the exact dinner layout during your tour.
Our photographer’s take: Barnwood is a particularly interesting option for couples who want a rustic or outdoor wedding but don’t want to drive 30–45 minutes outside Madison. You get mature trees, outdoor ceremony sites, and a barn atmosphere while still being only a few minutes south of downtown.

Cambridge Winery — Cambridge, Wisconsin
Location: 600 Kenseth Way, Cambridge, WI 53523
Wedding capacity: Up to 300 guests
Style: Winery / vineyard / modern
Ceremony options: Outdoor vineyard ceremony with indoor backup
Best for: Vineyard ceremonies, larger weddings, onsite catering and bar service, and couples who want an outdoor setting without a traditional barn venue

Cambridge Winery is located east of Madison in Cambridge and offers something fairly unusual among Southern Wisconsin wedding venues: a vineyard ceremony combined with a large modern indoor reception space.
The outdoor ceremony area overlooks the vineyard and includes a gazebo, giving couples a scenic ceremony setting without needing to bring in much additional structure or décor.
One of the most important practical features is that the indoor reception space also serves as the weather backup for vineyard ceremonies. In Wisconsin, we always like seeing a venue with a real indoor contingency plan rather than a backup that requires completely reinventing the wedding morning-of.
The reception space accommodates up to approximately 300 guests and has a much cleaner, more modern feel than many rustic countryside venues. That makes Cambridge Winery a good option for couples who want outdoor scenery and vineyard photographs without necessarily wanting the traditional barn aesthetic.
From a photography standpoint, the vineyard is obviously one of the biggest advantages. Rows of vines create strong lines and depth in portraits, and later in the day the open landscape can give us beautiful light around sunset.
The patio and outdoor areas also give guests a place to move outside during cocktail hour or throughout the reception.
Cambridge Winery includes private wedding-party suites, onsite parking, tables and chairs, glassware, dishware and silverware, along with an onsite wedding coordinator.
Food and beverage service is also handled in-house. For couples who would rather simplify the number of separate vendors involved in the day, having catering and bar service through the venue can make planning considerably easier.
Our photographer’s take: Cambridge Winery is a good fit for couples who like the idea of an outdoor Wisconsin wedding but want something visually different from a barn or country club. The vineyard gives us a distinctive portrait environment while the modern indoor space provides a reliable weather backup and enough capacity for a fairly large wedding.

Hotel Wedding Venues Near Madison, Wisconsin
Park Hotel Madison — Downtown Madison, Wisconsin
Location: 22 S Carroll St, Madison, WI 53703
Wedding capacity: Up to 330 guests in the Hall of Wisconsin; approximately 130 guests in Top of the Park
Style: Downtown hotel / classic / Capitol views
Ceremony options: Indoor
Best for: Capitol Square weddings, onsite lodging, large receptions, and couples who want everything within walking distance downtown
Park Hotel Madison has one of the best locations of any wedding venue in the city. The hotel sits directly on Capitol Square, which means the Wisconsin State Capitol is essentially outside the front door.
For wedding photography, that location opens up a lot of possibilities without adding travel time to the timeline. Capitol portraits, downtown streets, State Street, Monona Terrace, and other central Madison locations are all within easy reach.
The hotel has two primary wedding spaces with very different feels.
Top of the Park is located on the eighth floor and accommodates approximately 130 guests for dinner. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlook Capitol Square and the surrounding city, so the view becomes a major part of both the ceremony and reception.
This can be especially beautiful later in the evening when the Capitol is illuminated and visible through the windows.
For larger weddings, the Hall of Wisconsin accommodates up to approximately 330 guests for a seated dinner. It offers a more traditional ballroom setting with chandeliers, flexible layouts, and enough space for dinner and dancing.
Couples can also combine spaces. For example, cocktail hour can take place at Top of the Park while dinner and dancing happen downstairs in the Hall of Wisconsin. That gives guests two very different experiences without asking them to leave the hotel.
Because Park Hotel is also a full-service downtown hotel, couples can get ready onsite, host wedding events in the building, and provide accommodations for guests in the same location.
That can make wedding-day logistics much simpler, particularly when a significant number of guests are traveling to Madison.
Our photographer’s take: Park Hotel’s real advantage isn’t just that it’s a hotel – it’s the location. Few venues put you this close to the Capitol while also giving couples reception space, guest rooms, getting-ready options, catering, and a weather-proof wedding plan in the same building.
For couples who want recognizable Madison wedding photographs without spending the day driving around the city, that can be a major advantage.

AC Hotel Madison Downtown — Madison, Wisconsin
Location: One N Webster St, Madison, WI 53703
Seated event capacity: Approximately 48 guests in the Isthmus Room
Cocktail reception capacity: Approximately 50 guests
Style: Modern hotel / downtown / intimate
Best for: Micro weddings, intimate dinners, rehearsal events, wedding-weekend lodging, and Capitol-area celebrations
AC Hotel Madison Downtown is best thought of as an intimate wedding or wedding-weekend option rather than a traditional full-size wedding venue.
The hotel is located just off Capitol Square, making it one of the most convenient downtown Madison locations for couples who want easy access to the Capitol, State Street, Overture Center, Monona Terrace, restaurants, bars, and other wedding-weekend destinations.
The hotel’s primary dedicated event space is the 924-square-foot Isthmus Room. It accommodates approximately 48 guests for a seated banquet or around 50 for a cocktail-style reception.
You may see the hotel list a maximum capacity of 64, but that figure refers to theater-style seating rather than a seated wedding dinner. For couples actually comparing reception venues, the 48-person banquet capacity is the more useful number.
That smaller capacity makes the AC Hotel particularly interesting for micro weddings, rehearsal dinners, welcome parties, post-wedding brunches, and couples planning an intimate downtown celebration.
The hotel’s location is excellent from a photography standpoint. Capitol Square is only steps away, and couples can easily incorporate downtown Madison architecture, State Street, Monona Terrace, and nearby streets into portraits without needing transportation.
The building is also home to Eno Vino Downtown on the tenth floor, which offers dramatic views of the Capitol and Madison skyline. Private event options at Eno Vino are separate from the hotel’s Isthmus Room and should be discussed directly with the restaurant if couples are interested in incorporating the rooftop experience into their wedding weekend.
Guest lodging is another obvious advantage. Couples hosting their actual ceremony or reception at Overture Center, Monona Terrace, The Madison Club, or another nearby venue can use AC Hotel as a convenient home base for themselves and their guests.
Good to know: Its current banquet capacity is approximately 48 and its standing reception capacity is about 50. The 64-person figure is a theater-style setup.
Our photographer’s take: AC Hotel makes the most sense for couples intentionally planning a small celebration rather than trying to squeeze a traditional wedding into a smaller event room. It’s also one of the stronger hotel options for couples getting married elsewhere downtown who want modern accommodations within walking distance of their venue and Capitol portrait locations.
The Madison Concourse Hotel — Downtown Madison, Wisconsin
Location: 1 W Dayton St, Madison, WI 53703
Wedding capacity: Up to approximately 700 guests for a seated wedding in the Grand Ballroom, with several smaller ballroom options
Style: Downtown hotel / classic ballroom
Ceremony options: Indoor
Best for: Large weddings, Capitol Square access, onsite lodging, and couples who want ceremony, reception, and guest accommodations in one place
The Madison Concourse Hotel is one of the largest full-service wedding venues in downtown Madison. Located just off Capitol Square, it combines traditional hotel ballrooms with one of the most convenient locations in the city for couples expecting a large number of out-of-town guests.
The Grand Ballroom is the hotel’s largest wedding space and can accommodate approximately 700 guests for a seated wedding setup. That makes the Concourse one of the few venues in central Madison that can realistically handle a very large guest list while still keeping everyone downtown.
Couples with smaller weddings have several other options. The Capitol, Wisconsin, Madison, University, Senate, and Assembly rooms can accommodate a range of guest counts, so couples aren’t forced into an oversized ballroom simply because they want the convenience of a downtown hotel.
The location is one of the venue’s biggest photography advantages. The Capitol is just outside the hotel, making Capitol Square portraits extremely easy to incorporate into the timeline. State Street, downtown architecture, Overture Center, and other central Madison locations are also within walking distance.
That can be particularly valuable during a busy wedding day. Instead of building a large transportation window into the schedule, we can step outside the hotel, photograph around Capitol Square, and return for the ceremony or reception relatively quickly.
The Concourse also has more than 370 guest rooms, so couples can host their wedding and keep guests in the same building. For weddings with a large number of people coming from outside Madison, that can simplify transportation, parking, getting ready, and the end of the night.
Couples can hold both their ceremony and reception onsite, and the hotel’s event team handles food and beverage service.
Our photographer’s take: The Concourse is strongest for couples who prioritize logistics. You can have getting ready, ceremony, reception, guest lodging, and downtown portraits all centered around the same location. For large weddings in particular, there aren’t many venues in central Madison that offer that combination.
Madison Marriott South
Location: 706 John Nolen Dr, Madison, WI 53713
Wedding capacity: Up to approximately 350 guests seated in the Capitol Square Ballroom; wedding events can accommodate roughly 10–400 depending on layout
Style: Modern hotel / ballroom
Ceremony options: Indoor
Best for: Large weddings, onsite lodging, easy parking, and couples who want flexible ballroom options close to downtown
Madison Marriott South is located on John Nolen Drive across from the Alliant Energy Center, a few minutes south of downtown Madison.
If the venue sounds unfamiliar, there’s a reason: this hotel was previously the Sheraton Madison Hotel and was rebranded as Madison Marriott South. Couples who toured or attended weddings here several years ago may still know it by its previous name.
The hotel has a large amount of flexible event space, with multiple ballrooms that can be divided into smaller rooms depending on guest count.
The Capitol Square Ballroom is the largest traditional wedding space. It accommodates approximately 350 guests for a seated banquet and around 450 for a standing reception. Other spaces such as the Williamson Street Ballroom and State Street Ballroom work well for smaller weddings.
This flexibility makes the Marriott useful for couples who want a hotel wedding but don’t necessarily need an enormous ballroom. Ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception can potentially use different spaces within the hotel, which can make transitions throughout the day easier.
Guest lodging is obviously another major advantage. Wedding parties can get ready onsite, guests can stay at the hotel, and couples don’t have to coordinate transportation at the end of the reception.
The hotel also offers complimentary parking and shuttle service to downtown, the UW campus, the airport, and other nearby destinations.
From a photography standpoint, its location gives couples a couple of options. Portraits can stay onsite for a simple timeline, or the wedding party can make the short trip downtown for Capitol, lakefront, or other Madison locations.
Our photographer’s take: Madison Marriott South is a practical choice for couples whose priorities are guest capacity, hotel accommodations, parking, and keeping the wedding day centralized. It may not have the architectural character of some smaller Madison venues, but it offers a lot of flexibility for larger weddings and out-of-town guest lists.
Golf Course Wedding Venues Near Madison, Wisconsin
Blackhawk Country Club — Madison, Wisconsin
Location: 3606 Blackhawk Dr, Madison, WI 53705
Wedding capacity: Up to approximately 250 guests for a traditional wedding reception
Style: Country club / lakefront
Ceremony options: Outdoor ceremony overlooking Lake Mendota with indoor backup
Best for: Lake views, sunset portraits, outdoor ceremonies, and couples who want a country-club wedding without leaving Madison
Blackhawk Country Club is tucked into Shorewood Hills on the west side of Madison and has one feature that immediately sets it apart from many other golf-course wedding venues: the property overlooks Lake Mendota.
We’ve photographed weddings at Blackhawk, and the lake view is one of the things we remember most about the venue.
Outdoor ceremonies can take place on the 10th tee, with Lake Mendota behind the couple. The golf course, mature trees, and lake give us plenty of portrait options without needing to leave the property.
At one Blackhawk wedding we photographed, storm clouds forced the outdoor ceremony indoors at the last minute. The couple was able to move the ceremony inside and continue the day without completely changing the timeline.
And then, almost perfectly, the weather cleared later in the evening.
We went back outside just after the first dances and photographed one of the best sunsets we’ve seen at a Madison-area venue.
That experience is one reason we always pay attention not only to how a venue looks when everything goes according to plan, but also to what happens when Wisconsin weather changes the plan.
Blackhawk gives couples both.
Inside, the club’s formal event spaces can be combined for larger receptions. The dining rooms have windows facing the golf course and lake, so the scenery remains part of the wedding even once guests move indoors.
The venue also provides onsite food and beverage service and a wedding coordinator.
Our photographer’s take: If sunset photographs are important to you, Blackhawk deserves a look. The western light over Lake Mendota and the golf course can be incredible late in the day, and you don’t need to leave the venue to get it.
It’s also a good example of why an indoor backup matters. We’ve photographed a wedding here that moved inside because of storms and still ended the evening outside with a beautiful sunset.

Lake Windsor Country Club — Windsor, Wisconsin
Location: 4628 Golf Dr, Windsor, WI 53598
Wedding capacity: Up to 400 guests in the Crystal Commons; smaller spaces accommodate approximately 200–350
Style: Country club / golf course
Ceremony options: Indoor and outdoor
Best for: Large weddings, natural light, golf-course portraits, flexible guest counts, and couples who want an all-in-one wedding venue north of Madison
Lake Windsor Country Club is located just north of Madison and is one of the larger wedding venues in the area. We’ve photographed weddings here — and we’ve also attended a wedding here as guests — so we’ve had the chance to experience the venue from both sides of the day.
One of our favorite features is the amount of natural light inside.
The Crystal Commons, Lake Windsor’s largest reception room, has floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the golf course. It accommodates up to approximately 400 guests for a seated dinner and includes chandeliers, a wooden dance floor, and a full-service bar.
Those windows make a noticeable difference for photography.
At one wedding we photographed here, the couple got ready in different parts of the reception space before guests arrived, and we were able to use the window light for both sets of getting-ready portraits.
For outdoor ceremonies, the venue has a gazebo surrounded by trees and landscaping. If the weather changes, ceremonies can move indoors, with both indoor and outdoor ceremony setups accommodating approximately 200 guests.
The golf course itself gives us plenty of portrait locations. We’ve used one of the bridges on the course for a first look and wedding-party portraits, and later returned to the course for golden-hour photographs.
Golf courses can be especially beautiful near sunset because the open landscape allows light to reach the couple without a lot of buildings or heavy tree cover blocking the horizon.
Lake Windsor currently offers three reception spaces.
The Crystal Commons accommodates up to 400 seated guests and works well for larger weddings.
The Pinnacle Room accommodates approximately 200 guests and has large windows along with an outdoor patio and fire table.
The Ruby is a covered outdoor-style reception option accommodating up to approximately 350 guests.
That range gives couples more flexibility than venues with only one reception room. A 150-person wedding doesn’t necessarily have to feel lost inside a 400-person ballroom, while couples with larger guest lists still have an option that works.
Lake Windsor also provides onsite catering and bar service, coordination, setup and cleanup options, and plenty of parking.
Our photographer’s take: Lake Windsor is especially strong from a photography standpoint because you get both excellent indoor window light and the open golf course outside.
That combination makes the venue less dependent on perfect weather. If it’s beautiful outside, we can use the course, bridge, landscaping, and sunset. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the floor-to-ceiling windows still give us attractive natural light indoors.

Nakoma Golf Club — Madison, Wisconsin
Location: 4145 Country Club Rd, Madison, WI 53711
Wedding capacity: Up to 200 guests
Style: Historic country club / golf course
Ceremony options: Onsite ceremony and reception
Best for: Classic Madison weddings, golf-course portraits, mature trees, and couples who want a country-club setting within the city
Nakoma Golf Club is located on Madison’s west side, only a few minutes from downtown but surrounded by the natural landscape of the UW Arboretum.
The golf course dates back to 1925, which gives Nakoma a more established, traditional feel than many newer golf-course venues in the area. Mature trees, rolling fairways, and the surrounding Arboretum create a setting that feels much more secluded than the club’s location within Madison might suggest.
Nakoma can host both wedding ceremonies and receptions onsite for up to approximately 200 guests. The club has several interior event spaces that can be combined or separated depending on the size and flow of the wedding.
From a photography standpoint, the property gives us the obvious advantage of having a large amount of outdoor space close to the reception. Golf-course portraits can be incorporated without building a separate portrait location into the timeline, while the mature trees and Arboretum surroundings give the grounds a softer, more natural feel than an open course with very little landscaping.
Nakoma also provides onsite catering and bar service, an event coordinator, room setup, tables and chairs, linens, china, glassware, and other reception essentials. That can simplify planning for couples who would rather not coordinate those pieces through several separate vendors.
Our photographer’s take: Nakoma is a good option for couples who like the convenience and service of a country club but don’t want to leave Madison. The established golf course, mature trees, and Arboretum setting give portraits more variety than you might expect from a venue only a few miles from downtown.
Nakoma currently confirms weddings for up to 200 guests, onsite ceremonies, in-house catering and an event coordinator; the course dates to 1925 and borders the UW Arboretum on three sides.
Glen Erin Golf Club — Janesville, Wisconsin
Location: 1417 W Airport Rd, Janesville, WI 53546
Wedding capacity: Up to approximately 450 guests in the Celtic House
Style: Modern golf-course venue / countryside
Ceremony options: Indoor and outdoor
Best for: Very large weddings, golf-course views, sunset portraits, and couples willing to look farther outside Madison
Glen Erin Golf Club is located in Janesville, south of Madison, and is one of the largest wedding venues included in this guide.
The centerpiece of the property is the Celtic House, a nearly 12,000-square-foot private event facility overlooking the golf course and 18th green. Unlike some older country-club ballrooms, the space has a cleaner, more contemporary look with neutral finishes that can work with a wide range of wedding styles.
The Celtic House can accommodate up to approximately 450 guests, making Glen Erin one of the better options in Southern Wisconsin for couples planning a very large wedding.
Outside, the venue has a large deck overlooking the golf course and 18th green. That gives guests an outdoor space during cocktail hour and gives us an obvious location for later-day portraits when the light begins to soften.
The course itself also provides plenty of room for portraits. Glen Erin includes complimentary use of golf carts for the couple and photographers, which can be surprisingly useful on a wedding day when we want to reach a great location on the property without spending 15 minutes walking there.
Couples can hold both the ceremony and reception onsite, and an indoor backup is available if weather changes the plan.
The venue also includes a private wedding suite, tables and chairs, linens, china, glassware, customizable uplighting, event staff, and a dedicated wedding coordinator. Food and beverage service is handled onsite as well.
Our photographer’s take: Glen Erin is most compelling for couples who need substantially more space than most Madison-area golf venues provide. The combination of a large modern reception room, outdoor deck, golf-course portraits, and room for several hundred guests makes it serve a very different need from a smaller Madison country club.
Glen Erin’s official wedding site currently says the Celtic House can accommodate 450 people, with full-day private use, a wedding suite, coordinator, tables/chairs, linens and golf-cart access; the main golf-club site describes the facility as nearly 12,000 square feet.
The Legend at Bergamont — Oregon, Wisconsin
Location: 699 Bergamont Blvd, Oregon, WI 53575
Wedding capacity: Approximately 250 guests in the clubhouse banquet facility
Style: Country club / golf course / modern traditional
Ceremony options: Onsite wedding options
Best for: Large country-club weddings, golf-course portraits, and couples looking south of Madison
The Legend at Bergamont is located in Oregon, south of Madison, and combines a large private golf course with a clubhouse designed to accommodate weddings and other events.
The clubhouse includes a banquet facility with seating for approximately 250 guests, along with a formal lounge, balcony, patio, and other spaces that can be incorporated into the wedding day.
One of the advantages of a property like Bergamont is the amount of space available for portraits. The championship golf course stretches across a large property with rolling fairways, landscaping, and long views, giving us plenty of opportunities to create photographs away from the reception building without leaving the venue.
The clubhouse itself has a more polished country-club feel than a rustic golf venue, so it works well for couples who like outdoor scenery but still want the reception to feel formal.
Having indoor and outdoor gathering spaces can also make cocktail hour flow more naturally. Guests can move between the clubhouse, balcony, patio, and surrounding property rather than spending the entire event in one ballroom.
Bergamont is part of The Legend Clubs, which provides dedicated wedding and event staff to help couples coordinate the details of the day.
Our photographer’s take: Bergamont is a good fit for couples who want a classic country-club wedding with a little more space and separation from the city. The golf-course setting provides the obvious outdoor portrait opportunities while the clubhouse gives the reception a more finished, formal feel.
The Legend currently identifies Bergamont’s clubhouse as having a 250-seat banquet facility, plus a formal lounge, balcony, bistro and patio.
Maple Bluff Country Club — Madison, Wisconsin
Location: 500 Kensington Dr, Madison, WI 53704
Wedding capacity: Up to 250 guests
Style: Classic country club / golf course
Ceremony options: Outdoor ceremony on the golf course, covered terrace ceremony, and indoor weather backup
Best for: Lake Mendota and Capitol-area weddings, outdoor ceremonies, classic country-club receptions, and couples who want multiple ceremony options
Maple Bluff Country Club sits on Madison’s north side in the Village of Maple Bluff, near Lake Mendota and only a short drive from downtown.
The club can accommodate wedding celebrations of up to approximately 250 guests and offers several ceremony possibilities.
For larger outdoor ceremonies, couples can use the green at Hole 10, which accommodates up to 250 guests. The open golf-course setting gives the ceremony a traditional country-club feel while surrounding guests with mature trees and landscaped grounds.
For smaller weddings, the South Terrace provides a covered ceremony option for up to approximately 100 guests. That space is particularly interesting because couples can still have the feeling of an outdoor ceremony while having some protection overhead.
An indoor backup space is also included with ceremonies, which is something we always want to see when evaluating an outdoor wedding venue in Wisconsin.
From a photography standpoint, the golf course gives us plenty of greenery and open space, while the club’s location also makes it possible to incorporate nearby Madison or Lake Mendota locations if the couple wants more variety.
The club itself has panoramic golf-course views, and some areas of the property also look toward Lake Mendota and the Wisconsin State Capitol. That gives the setting a stronger connection to Madison than a golf course located farther into the countryside.
Maple Bluff also provides ceremony logistics, an event manager, chairs and setup, rehearsal time, getting-ready areas, and golf-cart transportation for the couple and photographer.
Our photographer’s take: Maple Bluff is particularly appealing if you like the traditional country-club experience but still want the wedding to feel connected to Madison. The mature course, Lake Mendota setting, Capitol views, and proximity to downtown give you more visual variety than a venue surrounded only by fairways.
Maple Bluff’s March 2026 wedding guide confirms events up to 250 guests, a Hole 10 ceremony for up to 250, a South Terrace ceremony for up to 100, an indoor ceremony backup, wedding-party prep space, and golf-cart transportation for the couple and photographer.
Bishops Bay Country Club — Middleton, Wisconsin
Location: 3500 Bishops Bay Dr, Middleton, WI 53562
Wedding capacity: Up to 300 guests
Style: Lakefront country club / covered pavilion
Ceremony options: Outdoor lakeside ceremony
Best for: Lake Mendota views, Capitol skyline views, large outdoor weddings, and couples who want the ceremony and reception directly on the water
Bishops Bay Country Club is located on the north shore of Lake Mendota in Middleton, with one of the most recognizable ceremony views of any wedding venue in the Madison area.
The lakeside ceremony location sits directly along the water, framed by mature trees with downtown Madison and the Wisconsin State Capitol visible across Lake Mendota. That combination gives the venue a very different feel from a traditional golf-course ceremony, even though Bishops Bay is also a country club.
The venue can accommodate weddings of up to approximately 300 guests, with receptions held in the covered Lakeside Pavilion. Bishops Bay currently describes its private-event spaces as accommodating groups from 30 to 300, while current wedding materials also list the pavilion and lakeside ceremony site for up to 300 guests.
From a photography standpoint, the lakefront is obviously the biggest advantage. The ceremony location, shoreline, mature trees, club grounds, and views toward Madison give us several different backgrounds without needing to leave the property.
The orientation across Lake Mendota can also create beautiful evening light. Even when the sky isn’t producing a dramatic sunset, the open water helps keep the horizon relatively unobstructed and gives portraits a sense of space that’s difficult to create at more enclosed venues.
The Lakeside Pavilion gives the reception an indoor-outdoor feeling while still keeping guests covered. Current wedding information describes a 6,000-square-foot pavilion, getting-ready rooms, tables and chairs, linens, dinnerware, onsite catering and bar service, and free parking.
One especially unique feature is boat access. Bishops Bay’s current 2026 wedding information specifically advertises Lake Mendota access by boat, which opens up some fun possibilities for couples who want to make the lake a bigger part of their wedding day.
Our photographer’s take: Bishops Bay is one of the strongest Madison-area options for couples who want the lake to feel like a central part of the wedding rather than simply a nearby portrait location. The ceremony view across Lake Mendota toward downtown Madison is something very few venues can replicate.
The Oaks Golf Course — Cottage Grove, Wisconsin
Location: 4740 Pierceville Rd, Cottage Grove, WI 53527
Wedding capacity: Up to 350 guests
Style: Golf course / tented outdoor reception
Ceremony options: Outdoor
Best for: Large weddings, outdoor ceremonies, golf-course portraits, sunset photographs, and couples who want flexibility with outside catering
The Oaks Golf Course is located in Cottage Grove just east of Madison and offers a wedding setup that feels quite different from a traditional country-club ballroom.
The primary reception space is a 6,300-square-foot tented event venue available from April through October. It accommodates up to approximately 350 guests and includes large French doors, chandeliers, polished concrete floors, ceiling fans and heat lamps.
Just outside the reception area is a separate 2,000-square-foot ceremony space overlooking the golf course and surrounding meadows. Because the ceremony and reception spaces are only steps apart, guests can move into cocktail hour without being transported to another part of the property.
From a photography standpoint, the property has more variety than the phrase “golf-course wedding” might suggest. The course was built on a former 168-acre family farm, and more than 250 mature oak trees are spread throughout the property. Those trees, open fairways, meadows and long sightlines give us plenty of options for portraits, particularly later in the day when the light gets lower.
The reception space also has an advantage for couples who want more control over catering. Unlike many country clubs that require couples to use the venue’s kitchen, The Oaks allows couples to choose a licensed and insured outside caterer. The venue handles the staffed bar and beverage packages.
The standard wedding rental currently includes tables and chairs for up to 250 guests, with additional rentals available for weddings approaching the 350-person maximum. Setup and teardown of those tables and chairs are handled by the venue.
Our photographer’s take: The Oaks is especially appealing for couples with a larger guest list who still want the wedding to feel outdoorsy. The mature oak trees and open course give us a lot of space for photographs, while the tented reception keeps the evening visually connected to the surrounding landscape.
Frequently Asked Questions About Madison, WI Wedding Venues
How much does a wedding venue in Madison, Wisconsin cost?
Wedding venue pricing in the Madison area varies widely based on guest count, date, catering requirements, and what the rental includes. A venue with a relatively low rental fee may require separate rentals, catering, bar staff, tables, chairs, or transportation, while hotel and country-club packages often include more of those services. When comparing venues, look at the estimated total event cost, not just the rental fee.
How far in advance should we book a Madison wedding venue?
For popular Saturday dates between late spring and fall, we recommend beginning your venue search roughly 12–18 months before the wedding when possible. Couples with flexible dates, Friday or Sunday weddings, winter celebrations, or smaller guest lists may have more options closer to the wedding date.
What is the largest wedding venue in Madison?
Several Madison-area venues can accommodate very large weddings. The Madison Concourse Hotel can host roughly 700 guests in its Grand Ballroom, while Monona Terrace can accommodate around 600 in the full Madison Ballroom. Outside Madison, Glen Erin can accommodate approximately 450 and Lake Windsor about 400 for a seated reception. Always confirm the specific seated wedding layout rather than relying on a venue’s general event capacity.
Are there wedding venues in downtown Madison with hotels onsite?
Yes. The Edgewater, Park Hotel Madison, AC Hotel Madison Downtown, Madison Concourse Hotel, and other downtown hotels allow couples and guests to stay close to the wedding. Even venues without rooms – including Overture Center, The Madison Club, MMoCA, Monona Terrace, and The Tinsmith – are close to multiple downtown hotels.
What Madison wedding venues have good indoor photography options?
From a photography standpoint, we especially value venues with large windows, attractive architecture, or dedicated indoor spaces that still work well when the weather is poor. The Tinsmith, Overture Center, The Eloise, The Edgewater, MMoCA, Olbrich Botanical Gardens, and several downtown hotels offer particularly useful indoor options.
Should we choose a wedding venue in Madison or outside the city?
Downtown Madison venues make hotels, restaurants, nightlife, transportation, and iconic Madison portrait locations especially convenient. Venues outside the city often offer more outdoor space, private grounds, fields, woods, vineyards, or larger guest capacities. Neither is inherently better – the right choice depends on whether location convenience or private outdoor space matters more to you.
How to Choose the Right Madison Wedding Venue
Choosing a wedding venue usually gets easier once you narrow the decision down to a few practical priorities: guest count, ceremony location, overall style, and how much of the wedding day you want to keep in one place.
Downtown Madison venues can make the wedding weekend especially easy for guests because hotels, restaurants, bars, and portrait locations are often within walking distance. Venues outside the city tend to offer more private outdoor space and can give couples access to woods, fields, vineyards, ponds, or golf-course scenery without leaving the property.
Wisconsin weather is also worth taking seriously. If you’re planning a late-fall, winter, early-spring, or outdoor wedding, we recommend looking closely at the backup plan during your venue tour. Ask not only where the ceremony moves if it rains, but whether you actually like that indoor space and whether there are attractive places for photographs if you can’t go outside.
As wedding photographers, those are some of the details we notice most. A venue can look beautiful on a perfect sunny afternoon, but the spaces that tend to work best for weddings are the ones that still give couples a great experience when the timeline changes or the weather doesn’t cooperate.
